Party On, Part Deux

December 8, 2007

Technically we would have had to move our dinner party to Taco Bell if the fabulous Stephanie hadn’t come over and saved the day. She helped me shop for table decorations and favors AND she polished the silverware and set the table. Her husband even rushed over to the market to pick up ice and napkins and drag over a variety of last minute items from their house.

MY hottie would have probably PREFERRED Taco Bell instead of having people at our house, but he still helped by sweeping, mopping, swishing dishes and boiling the stickers off our new glasses, not to mention watching the kids while I rushed around town to my appointments and last minute shopping.

What did I do you ask? Well, I DID go to my Drs appointment and had the sweetest 3D Ultrasound. Then I ate lots of the cookies while we put the favors together.

Here’s some photos….I think it turned out AWESOME.

Here’s the table. Our table seats 8 and we expected 13. We had to squish everyone in and at the last minute we had 2 people cancel…pulling out the two extra settings helped but it was still pretty nice and cozy.
The Table.

Obviously our theme was red and gold. It looked awesome since my kitchen is red and maizey-gold and my tree is red and gold and I pretty much heart read and gold. We had a mini saga when I went to just about every store and they were out of any kind of red, gold or white tablecloths and napkins. Seriously, Target had no linen napkins left. Not even ugly ones. I called my MIL who saved the day with a long, fancy, gold table cloth that we just folded down the middle and used as a runner.

Here’s the setting:
The Setting

The scroll on my fancy new dishes matched the scroll on the table cloth pretty dang good, eh? And yeah, don’t ask where the napkins were….we ended up getting paper napkins at the very last minute, which by that time was perfect and I didn’t really care anymore because I wanted to do was eat all the food and sit down.

Didn’t our favors turn out cute? They doubled as place cards, we put their names on the miniature ornaments I found at Ikea. The buckets were from Michael’s dollar section and I found some good sales on cherry chocolates, Linder Truffles and picked up those cute dark chocolate covered shortbread cookies from Trader Joes. (Which are so delish and I can eat a box by myself. As a matter of fact I hid a box in my candy stash and will sudo chop any fingers who try to sneak one.)
The Favor

To drink we had 3 choices: water with lemon, Mock Champagne (super easy and yummy, click for the recipe) and Strawberry Pomegranite Italian Sodas. The sodas were super tall but had lame lables on them, so I wrapped them up in gold foiled wrapping paper and tied the bow around them. They were supposed to have a cute tag on them, but like I said, I ran out of time. I should have taken a photo of the drinks because they were the exact shades of gold and red as the rest of the table.
Italian Sodas

This one shows our centerpiece a little better. It’s just a hurricane glass with ornaments, a little generic, but easy, cheap and perfect. Plus, everyone could still see everyone over it. Don’t you hate when you’re trying to follow a conversation and you have to lean into your husband to even see who is talking on the other side of a massive table arrangement? Geez, I HATE that, I like to watch lips move I guess. Anyways…We found a long strand of the funky gold covered leaves to swirl arround the base and the bead covered glass candles were a great find in the super clearance at Michaels. I had an extra spot in the frame so I put in an extra photo of the cookies that I’ll be going to eat a handful of as soon as I’m done typing here. I have a feeling the box will be gone before dinner.
The Centerpiece

Before I forget, all the digital scrap goodies are from Shabby Miss Jen who has 3 adorable new Christmas kits. I got them all and can’t wait to use them over at ScrapJunkie which has been put on the back burner with all this Christmas Hoo-Rah.

Cookie time.

Party On

December 7, 2007

‘Tis the season for Holiday Parties and for us, this first weekend of December is packed with soiree’s that need cute clothes and alas, maternity+cute+holiday-ish=disaster. Well, disaster or $98 which I refuse to spend on one shirt that can only be worn somewhere semi fancy and not to the park with the kids. I probably couldn’t even wear it eating breakfast next to my kids. Plus, there are some guests who will be at both parties so that means I need two shirts since wearing the same shirt two nights in a row would be, *gasp* a big fashion no-no.

Currently we have 8 hours until Party Number 1, which happens to be at my dinner hosted at my house and I still need a tablecloth, napkins and something refreshing and pretty to drink during dinner. Most importantly, I need some glasses to put the drink in because I’ve just realized that we have 12 guests and only 4 glass glasses that aren’t sippy cups.

There are a few bits of good news:

1. My Hottie bought us some new silverware and I didn’t even have to get it for Christmas. (Kitchenware for Christmas gifts is not romantical)
Silverware

2. My Hottie bought me new fancy dishes. We’ve offically been married for 9 years and 2 days and never had nice completely matching dishes.

3. I found these super cute red berry picks on super sale and they look cute on the table.

4. The only thing I need to prepare for dinner is the ham. Everyone else is bringing dishes to share, which takes a huge load off.

5. I have a Gas Station Code Red to get me through the day. Bliss.

I have a doctors appointment and then I’ll rush off to a few stores to buy the bits I’m still needing…I’m anxious to see if things pull together by 6pm.

Crepes

June 8, 2007

I love crepes. They are equally good for breakfast, lunch and dinner.

When Tammy responded that she’s never had crepes, I knew I had to share this yummy goodness with everyone. It’s my social duty to tempt you into eating all these delectable treats so you won’t fit into skinny jeans. Then I won’t feel bad if when I’m not the only one who can’t pull those dang jeans 2 inches past my kneecaps.

The best crepe I ever had was in Paris in the Jardin des Tuileries right in front of the Louvre. It’s been about 10 years but I can still taste that gooey melted cheesy scrumptiousness. If I can ever talk my husband in to taking me back, we will be going straight back to that park to see if that Crepe maker is still there. (I just found out my husband is my new secret blog lurker so I have to start dropping hints.) Sweetie, take me to Paris for my birthday, take me to Paris for my birthday, take me to Paris for my birthday. If not for my birthday, our 10th anniversary. Now that would be amazing!

Okay, I better stop daydreaming. Back to crepes. The point of the story is to that you have try crepes with different fillings. My mom makes delicious Seafood Crepes. Another great filling for crepes is chicken, mozzerella and marinara, rolled up and topped with more marinara and mozzerella. Very tasty. By far the most popular fillings are sweet things like puddings and fruit.

All you need is a basic crepe recipe, a saute pan or skillet and some fillings….or not. A few of my kids like them rolled up plain or just lightly spread with jelly. This is a great kid-friendly cooking activity. These instructions were originally typed up by my sister Rachie, who gets props for some seriously professional crepe making abilities.

    Basic Crepes

1 cup milk
1 cup eggs (just crack eggs to fill up a cup)
1 cup flour
If desired: a dash of vanilla

Put all ingredients in a blender and blend until completely smooth. You can hand mix too, but nobody wants chunky crepes.

Get a skillet the size you would like the crepes. A small saute pan is fine. You don’t want it too big that you can’t flip it! When we’re making lots, or trying to make them fast, I use my counter top skillet so I can cook two at a time.

Heat your stove top to meduim.

Depending on your pan, you may need to put some butter on the pan and spread it around the whole surface. I usually butter my pan every 5 or 6 crepes.

Pour some batter out onto the middle of the pan, only putting enough to spread around the whole pan so it isn’t too thick (it usually takes a couple times to figure out the right amount to pour each time!) Spread the batter quickly around the pan by just holding the handle and rolling your wrist in a circular motion until the batter just slightly goes up the sides of the pan and filling in all the gaps and holes in the middle. Put it back on the stove and be ready to flip it, because they cook fast!

Remember, you want THIN Crepes. The thinner, the better. I probably put LESS than 1/4 cup of batter in a small skillet.

Once the edges on the sides start pulling away from the side of your skillet, slide your spatula around the edges and flip. It only takes about 15 seconds per side. You don’t want brown or golden, you want cooked. They are not much different in color than the batter.

Flip it on a plate, spread more butter if needed, and start a new one!! I usually put butter on after every two, because it’s a major bust when they start sticking and you have a ruined one trying to scrape it off. It’s very sad when this happens, but kind of good because you get to eat the scraps. (Rachie, I agree!)

You can refrigerate crepes for 4 or 5 days. I personally don’t think they freeze all that well. The are too thin and come out cracked and soggy.

Crepes are super easy and you can make a stack of them fast, so it’s a great recipe for big groups. Plus people are always all impressed because it looks like this fancy shmancy dessert, when it only took you 5 minutes to make. If you have leftovers after making dessert crepes, you can have dinner crepes (like the Seafood or Chicken Mozzerella noted above) the next day! Be prepared to gain at least 5 pounds after this dessert.. Enjoy!

**Don’t forget the fillings!! Just put them out buffet style, spoon them on in different combinations, and roll up the crepe! **

For Dessert Crepes:
Nutella (hazelnut-chocolate spread)
Raspberry, cherry or blueberry Pie Filling
Fresh Strawberries
Bananas
Whipped cream
Powdered Sugar (on top of the rolled crepe or inside, it is equally delicious)
Chocolate, vanilla or white chocolate pudding
(My favorite is white chocolate pudding, cherry pie filling, whipped cream and powdered sugar. Nutella and bananas is a close second.)

For Lunch Crepes:
cheese (swiss is my favorite)
lunch meat (ham and swiss…mmmm)
jelly (PB&J is pretty good too)
