Tackle It Tuesday – The Cleaning of My Closet III

March 27, 2007

Tackle It Tuesday Meme
I am STILL tackling my closet, but it’s getting better and better. I have to say, there are times where I walk in my closet just to look at how pretty it’s looking!

I finally made it over to Ikea to pick up a bunch of these baskets. Ikea BasketsI already had a few of these baskets in my house and I love them. They are such great sizes and very sturdy, plus they are pretty inexpensive–just what I needed for my closet!

On one shelf I have two baskets-I put hats in one, bags and purses in another. Up in my fancy schmancy new shelves I put a few baskets for sheets and bedding.
Bags and HatsSheets and Bedding
Although we have lots of beds, I don’t have much bedding. Each bed has two sets of sheets. One set is on each bed and the other set is in the bucket. On sheet washing day, the dirty sheets go off and the clean sheets immediately go on. This way if something comes up, we aren’t scrambling at bedtime to find sheets that fit each bed. The only beds that have lots of extra sheets are the babies cribs. The great thing about the basket is that I can grab the appropriate basket and tote it around the house as we change sheets, put the dirty ones in the basket to take to the laundry area, then I can fold the freshly washed sheets right back into the basket.

We were having a dilemma with our shoes and my mom suggested I put something infront of the door. It’s big double slider and we never ever open one of the sides, so we thought we’d give it a try. We found some great shoe racks at Costco that are nice and sturdy, plus look better than our old plastic shoe holders (that were recycled to the girls). We each had to purge some shoes to get it to fit and it looks like we better not buy anymore shoes or we’re going to need another rack.
If the Shoes fit!

I still need to finish a little calking on the shelves (so I can use that middle cubby!) and paint the insides of the cubbies, which I’ll hopefully have finished tackling by the end of today!

The Cleaning of My Closet, Part Deux

March 15, 2007

For whatever ‘Friend’ commented that I haven’t been around and the closet must have been a big job, you’re killing me! I am a curious girl and I hate not knowing who you are, but I have a hunch….

However, Friend, you are right The Cleaning of My Closet IS a pretty big job. We tackled most of it on Friday and then had family in town Saturday, Sunday and Monday. So we do still have some work to do…and I need a little advice.

Here’s what’s going on:

We cleared out everything and ta-da! I vaccummed every nook and cranny and it’s actually white in there!
All Clean!

This is the BEFORE picture of my Hubby’s side and then a little demolition action.

Demolition Time!

Seriously, there was a lot of crap in that closet.
the bed....

We really need some cubby space for blankets, towels, and of course clothes. We don’t have much of a linen closet. The little upstairs cupboard space we did have I turned into toy storage so the kids couldn’t have so much access to dump out every single toy we owned -which took days to clean up each time.

So, DH took out the bar on his side and built this:

Cubbies

The very top holds big blankets and extra bedding. There is a cubby for beach towels with a bin for all our swimming suits, cubbies for DH’s shirts, shorts and pants and cubbies for my shorts and pants. I need to get over to Ikea and get some huge baskets and I’ll be putting hats in one and purses in another. My favorite part is the room for the new laundry sorter and a big basket for dirty towels. We did get the tie rack installed too.

So here’s where I need a little help. We haven’t done anything to the other side yet. The first plan was to build another bar, so there are two bars on each wall, but I need a long section for dresses. We will be building wider shelves on the top for more storage, but where do we put all the shoes? I have two laundry baskets on the floor now just to keep them together until we formulate a plan.
The other side...

Even thought the photos don’t make it look too organized, it really is great!! We threw out TONS of stuff and really, I could probably get rid of most my clothes, I don’t fit in them very well, but I can’t walk around nekkie.

Any great shoe storage ideas? It’s a double sliding door, so we can’t hang anything on it.

Tackle It Tuesday – Introducing The Cleaning Of My Closet, The Mini Series

March 6, 2007

Tackle It Tuesday Meme

So amazingly enough, I was able to keep the kids rooms, that were tackled last week clean for the entire week. I’ve started threatening the girls with their lives and they are getting into a better habit of cleaning up at the end of the day and cleaning up again in the morning after they’ve gotten dressed.

Today is a tricky tackle for me…I HAVE GOT TO CLEAN OUT MY CLOSET. I have a feeling there may be a sequel next week to this hairy mess. Actually, I think I’ll make this a mini-series event.

Let me give you a little background excuse to why it’s such a trashy mess:

We moved into this house when I was 20ish weeks pregnant with twins. Is that enough excuse to have boxes STILL unpacked in my closet now that they babies are 18 months? (Yes, you’re answer will depend if we stay friends or not!) I have a hard time cleaning with them – they’re awfully helpful and love to tip out baskets and boxes and tear papers and eat things that really shouldn’t be eaten. It’s easier to clean when they’re sleeping, but when they sleep it’s one on one time with Tootsie or *confession* blogging time!

I WILL clean out my closet. It may take all week, but it just has to be done. Who can come over and help me?

At the sake of complete and utter humiliation-because people I actually have to see on a daily basis read this blog. Here is a picture of my closet:

A note to make me feel a little better: The rest of my house is virtually tidy. Okay, well, mostly tidy.

The Toy Room....

The toyroom will never be tidy, I have to accept that as a lost cause and the garage has hope, but not until I get my butt out there and organize all my crafty stuff. But the kids rooms are spotless and the downstairs is pretty much always clean just incase someone decides to stop in.

I think I’ll round up some guest bloggers for my Closet Cleaning Mini Series. Any tips would be greatly appreciated. I need some good ideas to get that baby organized.

AND…if you’re looking for the tote bags, they’re coming tomorrow in my Works For Me Wednesday Post entitiled: Bins, Baskets and Totes, OH MY! Here’s a little teaser:
